THE CHARTERHOUSE

The Ferrara ‘Charterhouse’ on Piazza Borso (in Italian known as La Certosa di Ferrara) was commissioned in 1452 by Borso d'Este and later expanded in 1498 by Ercole I d'Este, with architect Biagio Rossetti. This Charterhouse is a classic example of Ferrarese Renaissance architecture, constructed with terracotta, red brick and Istrian marble. Situated in the northeastern part of the city’s historic centre, the original monastery features vaulted terracotta arches around its inner perimeter. Inspired by the architecture, we designed a minimalist vaultedarch podium, hand-painted by skilled artisans to mimic a terracotta finish.
